Nadat ik in februari 1981 de doctoraalstudie Kunstgeschiedenis aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht afsloot - waarbij ik me had toegelegd op onderzoek naar opvattingen over, en de praktijk van interieurarchitectuur en productvormgeving in de 20e eeuw - heb ik enige tijd op free-lance basis gewerkt aan opdrachten en onderzoek.

Vanaf oktober 1992 ben ik als kunsthistoricus verbonden aan de Willem de Kooning Academie ('Art, media & design'), en sinds 1990 ook aan de Academie van Bouwkunst Rotterdam - beide onderdeel van Hogeschool Rotterdam.

Daarnáást werk ik regelmatig op free-lance basis aan allerlei publicaties over beeldende kunst en vormgeving, verzorg ik lezingen, werk ik aan divers onderzoek (in opdracht en op eigen initiatief) en ben ik betrokken bij (kunstenaars-)projecten - dit alles onder het motto 'Het OOG'.

Sinds het voorjaar van 1997 (sinds 2005 in samenwerking met Willem Besselink) organiseer en programmeer ik Het Plafond - 'ruimte voor kunsten en cultuur in het woonhuis van Willem Besselink en Guus Vreeburg' - aan de Gedempte Zalmhaven in Rotterdam. Meer daarover op de site van Het Plafond

Als kunsthistoricus ben ik niet een 'specialist' - die van één onderwerp álles weet; liever zie ik mezelf als een 'generalist' - die van véél dingen iets weet. Meer daarover in mijn statement.

Introduction

After having finished an MA-study of Art history at the University of Utrecht / NL in early 1981 - doing research on ideas and practice of interior design and product design in the 20th century - I worked as a freelancer on various commissions and research-projects.

Since October 1982 I serve as an art historian at Willem de Kooning Academy ('Art, media & design'), and since 1990 at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Planning as well - both are part of Hogeschool Rotterdam / Rotterdam University for Professional Education in Rotterdam / NL.

Apart from that I work as a freelancer, regularly writing articles and other publications on art and design, giving lectures on various topics, doing research projects (some commissioned, some at my own initiative), and participating in artists' projects. All these activities are done as 'Het OOG' ('the eye').

Since the Spring of 1997 (and since 2005 in collaboration with Willem Besselink) I organize and curate Het Plafond ('the ceiling') - a 'space for the arts and for culture in the home of Willem Besselink and Guus Vreeburg' - at Gedempte Zalmhaven in Rotterdam. As an art historian, I'm not a specialist in any one subject; I'd rather consider myself a 'generalist' - one, who like ancient Ulysses, knows a bit on many subjects.
